Raised-bed irrigation problems usually show up as a pattern: plants at one end are dry, soil stays wet near a fitting, the bed edge receives more water than the center, or one crop declines while another looks normal. Diagnose the pattern before increasing runtime.
Symptom: dry plants beside wet tubing
Check whether the emitter is actually delivering water into the root zone. Remove mulch near the outlet, run the zone, and watch for a clogged emitter, pinched distribution tube, or water channeling down a gap in dry potting mix.
Flush the branch before replacing emitters. If the first emitter works and the far end does not, inspect line length, filter condition, pressure regulation, and whether the header is too small for the number of outlets.
Symptom: soil stays wet for days
Probe several inches below the surface. If the lower root zone is saturated, reduce frequency before shortening or lengthening a single cycle.
Raised beds can drain quickly at the surface while staying wet near the bottom when the mix is compacted or the bed has poor drainage. Check for a blocked drainage layer, a low spot under the bed, or irrigation that runs again before the previous cycle has drained.
Symptom: water runs over the bed edge
Runoff usually means water is arriving faster than the mix can absorb it. Split a long cycle into two shorter cycles with a soak interval, move emitters farther from the edge, and confirm that mulch is not forming a channel toward the frame.
Do not solve edge runoff by placing emitters directly against the sides. Watering near the center of planting rows gives the root zone time to absorb moisture and reduces loss to the frame or walkway.
Symptom: one end of the bed is dry
Compare output at the first and last emitters for the same interval. A weaker far end may indicate a clogged filter, a partly closed valve, a long run of undersized tubing, or too many emitters on one branch.
For long or wide beds, use a larger header before branching to smaller tubing. A looped header or two supply points can improve distribution where a single feed leaves the far end weak.
Symptom: tomatoes crack or wilt despite regular watering
Check root-zone moisture at different depths and compare the schedule with weather. Tomato cracking often follows large swings between dry and saturated soil rather than a single missed day.
Use consistent, measured cycles and avoid soaking a severely dry bed all at once. Mulch, correct emitter placement, and a timer with multiple start times can reduce sudden moisture swings.

Seasonal maintenance
Flush line ends at startup and after repairs. Clean filters regularly, check timers after battery changes or power interruptions, and inspect tubing for damage from tools, rodents, or sun exposure.
At the end of the season, drain exposed components before freezing weather. Label each bed line and valve so a future repair does not require tracing every branch.
