Fertigation 101: How to Fertilize Through Drip Irrigation Systems

Fertilizing through drip irrigation — called fertigation — is a technique I recommend to every serious gardener. It delivers liquid fertilizer directly to the root zone with every watering cycle, which means plants get nutrients exactly when they can absorb them. I’ve used fertigation in my own vegetable garden for years, and the difference in growth rate and yield compared to granular fertilizer is noticeable within two weeks. Here’s how to set up and run a fertigation system safely and effectively.

What Is Fertigation and Why Use It?

Fertigation injects water-soluble fertilizer into your drip irrigation lines. Instead of spreading granular fertilizer on the soil surface — where 30-50% of nutrients can be lost to runoff or evaporation — fertigation places nutrients right at the root zone where uptake efficiency reaches 90-95%. The result is 20-40% less fertilizer used for the same or better growth. What Equipment Do You Need for Fertigation?

The standard fertigation setup uses a venturi injector (like the Mazzei injector) that creates suction to draw fertilizer solution into the irrigation line. A complete venturi fertigation kit costs $30-60 and includes the injector, backflow preventer, filter, tubing, and suction line. You’ll also need a 5-gallon bucket for the fertilizer solution and water-soluble fertilizer formulated for drip irrigation. How Do You Calculate the Right Fertilizer Ratio?

The standard dilution ratio for drip fertigation is 1:100 — that’s 1 gallon of concentrated fertilizer solution mixed to deliver the right amount per 100 gallons of irrigation water. For a typical vegetable garden, mix 1-2 pounds of water-soluble 20-20-20 fertilizer in 5 gallons of water for each 1,000 sq ft of garden. Run the fertigation cycle for 15-20 minutes at the start of your regular watering cycle to push the nutrients to the root zone, then follow with plain water for 10-15 minutes to flush the lines. Can You Use Organic Fertilizers in Drip Systems?

Yes, but with some important caveats. Liquid fish emulsion, seaweed extract, and compost tea work well in drip systems. Use a 50-mesh or finer filter before the injector to prevent clogging. Avoid organic fertilizers with sediment or suspended solids — these clog drip emitters quickly. I recommend using a separate, dedicated injector for organic fertilizers and flushing the system with clean water for 10 minutes after each fertigation cycle. What Common Problems Occur with Fertigation Systems?

The three most common fertigation problems I see are emitter clogs from undissolved fertilizer, backflow preventer failure, and incorrect injection rates. Emitter clogging accounts for 60% of fertigation issues — prevent this by using fully water-soluble fertilizer and flushing lines after each cycle. A clogged venturi injector (from dried fertilizer crystals) can be cleaned with white vinegar soak for 30 minutes.
