Olla Irrigation: Ancient Clay Pot Watering for Modern Gardens

But before it failed, that single pot kept three tomato plants alive through a two-week drought with zero additional watering.

Olla (pronounced oy-ya) irrigation is an ancient technique that uses unglazed clay pots buried in the soil. You fill the pot with water. The water seeps through the porous clay walls at a rate the soil can absorb.

The plant roots grow toward the moisture source and drink directly. No tubing, no pressure regulators, no timers. Just physics and pottery.

How does an Olla actually work underground?

The science is simpler than any modern drip system. Unglazed terracotta has microscopic pores. When you fill the pot with water, those pores wick moisture outward into the surrounding soil.

The rate of seepage depends on soil type. Sandy soil pulls water faster, about 3-4 days between refills. Clay soil pulls slower, about 7-10 days. The plant roots sense the moisture gradient and grow toward the pot wall.

The Olla bed used 60% less water over a 6-week period. The drip bed had more consistent top-soil moisture, but the Olla bed had deeper root growth. The Olla tomatoes yielded 18% more fruit.

The catch: Ollas need manual refilling. Drip can be automated with a timer.

What size Olla do you need for different plants?

One 1-gallon Olla waters 2-3 tomato plants or 4-5 pepper plants for 3-5 days. A 3-5 gallon Olla handles a small tree or a dense 4×8 raised bed for up to 10 days.

The Growoya brand makes a good 1-gallon Olla at $29. Oyas brand runs $35-60 for larger sizes. You can also DIY with a standard terracotta flowerpot.

Seal the drainage hole, bury it up to the rim, and fill with water. Total cost: about $8.

Small ollas (under 1 gallon) dry out too fast in hot weather. Go with 1-gallon minimum for any outdoor use.

Which plants benefit most from Olla irrigation?

Deep-root plants are the best candidates. Tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, zucchini, squash, melons, and fruit trees all thrive with Olla irrigation. Shallow-root plants like lettuce, spinach, basil, and herbs do not benefit.

Their roots stay in the top 2-3 inches of soil where the Olla has minimal effect. Both grow better than before.

One 4-gallon Olla at the drip line kept the soil consistently moist for 8 days. The deep watering encouraged the fig roots to grow downward instead of surfacing.

How do you install an Olla correctly?

Dig a hole deep enough that the pot neck sits 1-2 inches above the soil surface. Place the Olla in the center of the planting area. Backfill firmly around the walls.

No air gaps. Fill the pot with water and cover the opening with a flat stone or ceramic lid to prevent evaporation and mosquito breeding.

The rim was flush with the soil surface. Dirt washed into the pot every time it rained.

Raise the rim above grade. Glazed ceramics do not wick water.

Only unglazed terracotta works. The plastic trapped humidity and the water grew algae within a week. Use a stone or a purpose-built lid.

Olla vs drip irrigation: Which is better for your garden?

Olla wins on water efficiency and root development. Drip wins on automation and scale. For a small garden with 4-8 tomato plants, ollas are simpler and more efficient.

For a 500-square-foot vegetable garden with mixed crops, drip irrigation gives you more control over individual plant watering. For containers and raised beds, ollas are ideal because they require no external plumbing. For large-scale production, drip is the only practical option.

Spend $29 on a Growoya and see if you like the hands-off approach. If you do, expand to ollas for all your deep-root plants. Keep drip for shallow-root crops and flowers.

Ollas handle the heavy feeders. Drip handles the rest. Best of both worlds.
