New sod needs moisture at the seam between the sod and the underlying soil so roots can knit into the site. The schedule should change as rooting improves; keeping the lawn constantly wet for weeks can create shallow roots, disease, and runoff.
First 7 to 10 days: keep the sod and soil interface moist
Water soon after installation so moisture reaches through the sod and into the top inch or two of native soil. Lift a corner of a piece of sod after a cycle to confirm that the underside is damp, not muddy.
During hot, windy, or very dry weather, short additional cycles may be needed to prevent the sod from drying at the seams. Use these only as needed; water running down the curb or pooling on the surface means the cycle is too long or the soil needs a soak interval.
Avoid foot traffic while the sod is soft. Walking on saturated sod compresses the surface and can separate seams before roots establish.
Days 10 to 21: water deeper and less often
As roots begin to hold the sod to the soil, transition from frequent light cycles to deeper cycles with more time between them. Tug gently on a corner; resistance indicates that roots are beginning to establish.
Check the soil below the sod rather than relying only on the grass color. A screwdriver or soil probe should enter moist soil several inches below the surface after watering. If the top stays wet but the lower soil is dry, use a slower, longer cycle or cycle-and-soak.
For clay soil, split a long cycle into two shorter runs separated by 30 to 60 minutes. This gives water time to infiltrate instead of moving across the surface.
Weeks 3 to 6: transition to a normal lawn schedule
Once the sod resists lifting and new growth appears, reduce frequency again and water deeply enough to encourage roots downward. The right interval depends on soil texture, turf species, heat, shade, and local watering restrictions.
Do not switch to a fixed twice-weekly schedule until the root zone is established. A shaded lawn in cool weather may need less water, while a sunny slope or sandy soil may need a different interval.

Set run times from precipitation rate
Measure sprinkler output with catch cups rather than assuming every zone applies water at the same rate. Spray heads, rotors, nozzle sizes, pressure, and spacing all change precipitation rate.
Apply enough water to wet the active root zone without causing runoff. If the surface begins to shine or water moves toward a sidewalk, stop the cycle, wait for infiltration, and resume with a shorter second cycle.
Inspect coverage at seams, corners, and along edges near pavement. These locations often dry first because of heat, wind, or poor head overlap.
Watch for overwatering and underwatering
Overwatering signs include soft soil, footprints that remain visible, yellowing grass, algae, and water draining from the lawn long after a cycle. Underwatering signs include gray-blue color, curling blades, visible seams, and dry soil under the sod.
Correct the cause before increasing runtime. A dry strip may be a blocked nozzle or poor arc adjustment, while a wet patch may be a low spot, leaking pipe, or head spraying a wall.
