Greenhouse Irrigation: Manage Humidity and Root Moisture

Greenhouse irrigation has two separate jobs: keep the root zone within a useful moisture range and avoid adding unnecessary humidity to the air. A schedule that keeps pots wet but leaves foliage damp, condensate on walls, or standing water on the floor can increase disease pressure even when plants receive enough water.

Separate root-zone moisture from air humidity

Measure root-zone moisture in the media, not by looking at the greenhouse air. A humid greenhouse can still contain dry pots, while a low-humidity greenhouse can have saturated root zones and poor oxygen around roots.

Use a finger test, soil probe, or moisture sensor at root depth. Check several representative containers or beds because the edge of a bench, a vent-side row, and the center of the house can dry at different rates.

Air humidity should be managed with ventilation, circulation, plant spacing, and watering time. Irrigation is part of the humidity equation, but it cannot replace exhaust fans or adequate vent area.

Choose the right delivery method

Drip emitters and microtubing are usually the best fit for greenhouse benches, grow bags, and beds. They put water at the root zone and keep leaves dry, unlike overhead sprinklers that wet foliage and raise humidity quickly.

Use a filter and pressure regulator before small emitters. Greenhouse systems often have many short branches, so a blocked emitter can affect one high-value plant without being obvious from the mainline.

Set timing with plant demand and drainage

Start with short irrigation events and inspect drainage afterward. If water runs from the bottom of a pot immediately, the media may be hydrophobic, the emitter may be too large, or the cycle may be too long for the container.

Use cycle-and-soak for dense media or large containers. Two short runs separated by 20 to 30 minutes often wet the root zone more evenly than one long run that channels water down the side of the pot.

Water early enough for foliage and bench surfaces to dry before the coolest part of the night. Overnight wetness and high relative humidity favor fungal diseases, especially when air movement is weak.

Manage humidity after irrigation

Run horizontal airflow fans to move air across the canopy rather than directly blasting young plants. Open sidewalls, roof vents, or exhaust fans when outside conditions allow; the goal is to remove humid air without creating damaging drafts.

Avoid leaving leaks, open ends, or overflowing trays in the greenhouse. A small drip leak can add humidity every day and obscure whether the crop is actually receiving too much water.

Check for condensation at sunrise. If droplets form on leaves, glazing, or crop supports, reduce late-day irrigation, improve air exchange, and confirm that plants are not packed so tightly that air cannot move through the canopy.

Use sensors as verification, not automation alone

Moisture sensors can show when a container has dried below a target, and a hygrometer can show humidity trends. Place sensors where they represent the crop, not directly under an emitter or against an exterior wall.

Review the readings with a physical inspection. A sensor may be accurate at one point while a clogged branch leaves adjacent plants dry, and a humidity reading may look acceptable at sensor height while condensation forms inside a dense canopy.

Weekly maintenance checklist

  • Inspect filters, pressure regulators, and end caps for leaks.
  • Compare output from the first and last emitters on each bench.
  • Check root-zone moisture at several locations after a scheduled cycle.
  • Remove standing water from floors and trays.
  • Review humidity overnight and at sunrise, then adjust ventilation before increasing irrigation.
