Drip Irrigation Troubleshooting: Fix Leaks, Clogs & Pressure Problems

Drip irrigation is reliable, but it’s not maintenance-free. After installing and servicing hundreds of drip systems, I can tell you that most problems fall into four categories: clogs, leaks, pressure issues, and emitter failures. The good news is that 80% of drip system problems are easy to diagnose and fix yourself with basic tools. Here’s my systematic approach to troubleshooting drip irrigation problems.

Why Is My Drip System Not Emitting Water?

If some or all of your drip emitters aren’t putting out water, the first thing I check is the pressure regulator. A failed regulator that drops below 10 PSI won’t push water through the tubing. Replace the regulator (costs $10-20). Next, check if the water source valve is fully open and the timer has battery power (replace AA batteries every 6 months). Then inspect the filter — a clogged 120-mesh filter reduces flow by 50-80%. Clean it by unscrewing the bowl and rinsing the screen. If filter cleaning doesn’t help, there may be a blockage in the mainline: disconnect the end cap and flush the line for 30 seconds. How Do You Fix a Leaking Drip Irrigation Line?

Leaks in drip tubing are almost always at connection points — barb fittings, couplings, or end caps. A pinhole leak in the tubing itself is rare in quality poly tubing but can happen from sun damage (UV degradation) after 3-5 years. To repair: cut out the damaged section with a utility knife and insert a coupling fitting ($1-3 at any hardware store). Push the tubing fully onto the barb — most leaks come from partial insertion. For a small pinhole, a goof plug ($0.25) pushes right into the hole. For leaking end caps, replace the cap or add a small piece of tubing pushed past the barb. Why Are My Emitters Clogged and How Do I Clear Them?

Clogged emitters are the #1 drip irrigation complaint I hear. The cause is almost always sediment or mineral buildup. If you have hard water (over 120 ppm calcium), mineral deposits can clog emitters within 6-12 months. To clear clogged emitters: disconnect the emitter from the tubing and soak it in white vinegar for 30-60 minutes, then flush with clean water. For pressure-compensating emitters, you can sometimes pop the diaphragm out, clean it, and reassemble. Prevention is the real solution: install a 120-150 mesh Y-filter at the water source ($8-15) and flush your drip lines every 3 months by removing the end cap and running water for 2-3 minutes. Why Is My Drip System Losing Pressure?

Low pressure in a drip system usually means one of three things: the pressure regulator is failing, you’ve added too many emitters for the tubing size, or there’s a restriction somewhere. A ½-inch drip line can handle about 200-250 GPH (about 200-400 emitters at 0.5-1 GPH each, depending on length). If you’ve added emitters beyond that capacity, split the system into two zones or upgrade to a ¾-inch mainline. Other pressure loss causes: a partially closed valve, a kinked hose (common where the tubing turns a sharp corner), or a filter that needs cleaning. How Often Should You Replace Drip Emitters and Tubing?

Quality drip tubing (UV-stabilized poly) lasts 5-10 years exposed to sunlight, longer if buried under mulch. Pressure-compensating emitters typically need replacement every 2-4 years as the silicone diaphragms lose elasticity. Non-PC emitters last 3-5 years. Filters should be replaced annually ($5-10). The pressure regulator diaphragm should be checked every 2 years and replaced if output pressure has dropped more than 5 PSI from the rated pressure.
