Drip Irrigation for Blueberries and Raspberries: Berry Bush Watering Guide

Blueberries and raspberries are both acid-loving berry bushes, but they have very different root structures and irrigation needs. Blueberries have fine, fibrous roots that stay in the top 12 inches of soil and never need to dry out. Raspberries have deeper perennial root systems that tolerate slightly drier conditions between waterings. I’ve grown both with drip irrigation, and the key difference is soil pH management for blueberries and careful crown watering for raspberries. Here’s how I set up drip irrigation for both.

Do Blueberries and Raspberries Need Different Drip Setups?

Yes. For blueberries, use ½-inch drip tubing with 0.5-1 GPH pressure-compensating emitters spaced 12-18 inches apart. Blueberry roots spread 2-3 feet from the crown but stay shallow, so a single drip line per row placed 6-8 inches from the plants works well. For raspberries, use ½-inch tubing with 0.5 GPH emitters spaced 12 inches apart, placed 4-6 inches from the base of the canes. In heavy clay soil, use 0.5 GPH emitters; in sandy soil, 1 GPH emitters deliver enough water before it drains away. Both crops need pressure regulation at 15-20 PSI ($10-15). How Much Water Do Blueberries and Raspberries Need?

Blueberries need 1-2 inches of water per week consistently—never let the root zone dry out completely, or the fine roots die back. A mature blueberry bush needs 4-6 gallons per week during fruit development. With 0.5 GPH emitters spaced 12 inches apart, a 30-minute drip session 3 times per week delivers about 6 gallons per bush. Raspberries need 1-1.5 inches per week and tolerate periods of light drying between waterings. A 10-foot raspberry row with 3-4 canes needs about 8-12 gallons per week during fruiting. How Do You Maintain Low Soil pH with Drip Irrigation?

Blueberries need soil pH between 4.5 and 5.5. Standard drip irrigation doesn’t change pH, but you can acidify the water through the system using diluted white vinegar or citric acid. Add 1-2 tablespoons of white vinegar per gallon of water to lower pH by about 0.5-1 point. Use a venturi injector to introduce acidified water through the drip system once a month. When Is the Best Time to Water Berry Bushes?

Morning watering (5-8 AM) is ideal for both crops. Blueberries benefit from early watering because the fine roots absorb moisture most efficiently in the cool morning hours. Run drip cycles for 30-45 minutes, 3-4 times per week for blueberries, and 20-30 minutes, 2-3 times per week for raspberries. During fruit ripening, keep soil consistently moist—fluctuating moisture in blueberries can cause splitting. Reduce watering in late fall to help plants harden off for winter. How Much Does a Berry Bush Drip System Cost?

For 10 blueberry bushes on a single drip line: $20-30 for 100 feet of ½-inch drip tubing with pre-installed emitters, $10-15 for a pressure regulator, $10-15 for filter and fittings, and $15-25 for a battery timer. Total: $55-85. For a 20-foot raspberry row: $15-20 for 50 feet of emitter tubing, $10-15 for regulator and filter, and $15-25 for timer. Total: $40-60.
